COMPANIES USING HOLISTIC STRATEGY FOR APPLICATION SECURITY REDUCE ODDS OF AN ATTACK BY 12 PERCENT, ACCORDING TO ABERDEEN REPORT

SAN FRANCISCO, California, September 2, 2008 - By applying the right balance of services and technology, companies can decrease application security attacks by 12 percent, according to the Aberdeen Group benchmark report, "Application Security: Protect Sensitive Data while Improving Compliance."

"A well-planned and holistically derived application security process can dramatically reduce a company's IT security exposure, improve compliance activities and streamline operational, financial and strategic processes," said Stephen Walker, senior research associate, Aberdeen.

Identifying "Best-of-Class" companies - 94% of whom use a formal application security development methodology - Aberdeen reached the following conclusions about their performance versus "laggards":
    • A year-over-year decrease of 8.6% in network security attacks
    • A year-over-year decrease of 7.3% in all application security attacks

"The report confirms what we know first hand - that off-the-shelf solutions fail to meet the threat posed by application vulnerabilities," said Greg Reber, CEO of AsTech Consulting. "It can be a very costly mistake, especially when a large organization is attacked."

Aberdeen found 70 percent of companies consider securing sensitive information a "high priority," while 50% of companies report that current secure coding practices are insufficient to address most application security needs for internal/custom-developed applications.
